black friday recipes

chocolate mint cookies

mary is one part of the couple that owns red + she's the first one that's always ready to celebrate so many events at our store. mary, along with her small team, loves to prepare the food + drinks for these events + our customers are always the happy recipients of all their time + efforts.

our first black friday sale was no exception to an event worth celebrating - all day we had cookies + punch for all of you that shopped with us - and there were many of you! for all that asked about mary's cookie recipe and party punch recipe - as promised - here are the recipes.

chocolate mint cookies

prep: 20 min

cook time: 10 min

ready in: 1 hr 20min

yield: 40 - 50 cookies

ingredients

3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar - i use 1/2 dark brown and 1/2 light brown sugar
2 tablespoons water
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 (4.5 ounce) packages Andes chocolate mints (may use 1/2 mint per cookie depending on the size you make)

directions

in a saucepan over medium heat, cook the sugar, butter and water, stirring occasionally until melted. remove from heat, stir in the chocolate chips until melted and set aside to cool for 10 minutes.
pour the chocolate mixture into a large bowl, and beat in the eggs, one at a time. combine the flour, baking soda and salt, stir into the chocolate mixture. cover and refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour.
preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). cut parchment paper to fit cookie sheets (may use the same paper for several batches of cookies). roll cookie dough into walnut sized balls and place 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.
bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, be careful not to over bake. when cookies come out of the oven, press one mint wafer into the top of each cookie and let sit for 1 minute. when the mint is softened, swirl with the back of a spoon to make a pattern with the green filling of the mint wafer. for smaller cookies, break mints in half.
place the cookie sheet immediately in the refrigerator. when your next batch is ready to be put in the refrigerator, the first batch is already cooled and ready to place in a container.

notes:

great freezer cookie! bake ahead for your event, put in ziploc bags and take out the night before you need them.

may also use white chocolate, or peanut butter chips on the tops if you don’t care for mint.

party punch

party punch

20 minutes to prepare

makes approximately 40 4 ounce servings

ingredients

3 (3 ounce) packages fruit flavored gelatin mix (i used 2 raspberry and 1 cherry or strawberry. may use any flavors you prefer)
4 cups white sugar (I used only 1 cup of sugar since the pineapple juice and ginger ale were both sweet)
13 cups boiling water
2 (46 fluid ounce) cans pineapple juice
1 (16 ounce) bottle lemon juice concentrate
2 (2 liter) bottles ginger ale, chilled

directions

in a large bowl, combine gelatin and sugar. stir in boiling water until mixture is dissolved. stir in pineapple juice and lemon juice concentrate. divide into containers, and freeze until solid. (used pleated bottom ziploc bags, gallon size)
to serve, place gelatin mixture in punch bowl, and chop into pieces. Pour in ginger ale.

notes:

i stored the bags in a cooler so they began thawing. used a knife to chop up a little before pouring the ginger ale over the mixture.

if you need to speed up the thawing process, put the ziploc bags in a warm water bath in the sink

this morning theresa - our display diva and textile maven - texted me to ask if her appointment with a special customer would work out this week. thanksgiving week is the busiest retail week of the year: we are all-hands-on-deck and moving at lightening speed to be ready for the stellar sale that starts online at midnight tomorrow and in-store on Black Friday.

theresa's text reminded me that this special customer first came in to red last year around this time. she was with her daughter, working on her weekend home in Fred, looking for great things to accent her already unique style. her text made me realized that how lucky we are: this single customer and friend invited theresa, invited red, into her home to help her not just decorate for the holidays, but to set the scene for so many of her family's best times and best memories. it's such an honor.

Tahnee, Brianna & Will

they've been here for us all summer (and then some), Tahnee, Brianna and Will, saving us left and right with extra hands and an eagerness to make each day bright... and now they are headed off to school.

Tahnee has been with us for over a year now, working weekends and after school during the school year. we'll miss her kind spirit, her willingness to pitch in whenever help was needed and her flexibility in completing any task at hand. she's headed into her first year at Texas Tech and we wish her the best!

Brianna is a sophomore at the University of Texas - she's been with red 2 summers in a row and will continue to help us with the website during the school year. Brianna excels at forethought - she's eager to move things ahead and she's self-motivated in a way we can't praise highly enough. we'll miss her at red but are happy she'll be staying on with us remotely as she heads into year 2 at UT!

Will joined us at just the right time - helping with warehouse and push pull, he was johnny-on-the-spot as we readied for the red hot sale and help make floor changes and deliveries each week during our busiest summer yet. Will is on his way to Southwestern University and we wish him a terrific year ahead!

though it's still 100 degrees at least outside, fall is in the air already. best wishes to all as you ready for school - thanks to Will, Tahnee and Brianna for all they've contributed to red and to each of us on the staff this summer.

6 years ago, red started one night over a good bottle of wine among friends. like all things hatched under those circumstances, the excitement comes first and the details seem to fill themselves in as the project grows and takes form. originally Carolyn & Mary pictured red as a small enterprise with one employee, selling vintage items a couple of days a week. red has been experimenting and growing ever since and now six years later, we are in our second location with twelve employees and a full range of vintage and custom made home goods.

from the very beginning red's focus has been on uniqueness, creativity and the full blown search for great pieces that can't be found anywhere else. this means partnering with artisans and craftspeople locally and worldwide. it means seeing the potential in vintage pieces that need just the right lift to come alive again.

marrying Mary's love for one-of-a-kinds and Carolyn's penchant for industrial vintage they created a unique mix of old and new. and it seems the more we've mused on that original mix, the more we've come to see it as it's own strand of design goodness: a way of mixing what you already have with what's new and fresh, or a way of mixing the new with something nostalgic and full of character. no matter which angle you come from, each new find is like the perfect missing piece to a unique and elaborate puzzle.

a year ago we moved to our current location, the old buick building on main street. from the design of the building to the buick sign which still hangs out front from the days when it was a dealership this new location has suited red in so many ways, like a glove that fits just right. most of all it has helped widen our circle of customers, design clients and friends - we've come a long way in 6 years. we couldn't do it without you and we look forward to all the ways we'll grow together in the years to come.

last week red was lucky enough to sponsor the Austin AIA Hill Country Tour and in preparation for the arrival of this group of architects and architectural enthusiasts we thought it best to do a little research into our very own digs.

Milton Crenwelge, still and current owner of our building, commissioned a one O'Neil Ford in 1945 to design the home for Fredericksburg, Texas' very own Buick dealership. finished in 1946, Crenwelge Buick is in keeping with much of Ford's later work - a modernist mix of glass, steel and concrete that nods both to the international style of Ford's inclinations and to the Texas soil he was designing for and upon...

in 1960, Ford was elected as a Fellow to the American Institute for Architecture. His work designing Trinity University (San Antonio), restoring La Villita (San Antonio) and The Little Chapel in the Woods (Denton) are part of what compels many architectural historians to call him "The best unknown architect of his time." And certainly Lyndon B. Johnson agreed, as he designated O'Neil Ford himself as the first and, to date, the last human national landmark - no other person has ever carried this title, usually given to buildings, preserves or historical sites.

Merida has just announced their 2011 color trend analysis. drawing from fashion designers, design schools and interior design production already in the works, Merida has put together a forecast we can't resist. scroll down to get a sneak peak on what's to come in fashion & home design for 2011.

2011 Color Trend #1: Midsummer Night’s Dream

combining boudreaux reds, rich plum and olive green, this color trend seems to take it's cue from the vineyards. lush textures, including velvet, taffeta and brocades make this a luscious look just over the horizon.

2011 Color Trend #2: Daybreak

think sunrise: but think beyond the glistening sky to the fresh leaves, fruits and scapes the sun will soon illuminate. this is daybreak. chartreuse, corals, celery greens, camel and blush, breaking through the haze with a new day for this retro palette.

2011 Color Trend 3: Forrest

this is when green goes glam, leaving linen and hemp textures behind for richer and more tactile fleece, leather and fur. branching into olive oil, army green, light lime and deep avocado, these greens are usually paired with camel, cream or a deep dark chocolate.

Here we are starting to see mid range neutral tones warm up rooms of harsh black and white. It’s a softening of the usual heavy contrast by using ivory as a base color and white as an accent. Oak, tan and ivory are paired with deep black giving depth to the space they encompass. - Merida

navy, cobalt and midnight black: night falls against the pale silvery glow of starlight and city lights. jilting one of fashion's strongest traditions that has always kept navy and black on separate palettes, these deep hues forecast something very new.

it's fall - time to snuggle in and think about the holidays... and yet, we're feeling a bit exotic and have just enough of a travel bug to start dreaming big. enter red's newest linen line by John Robshaw: doing all the seeking and scouting for you, John Robshaw's working with the best of Indian block printers to create linens that feel like home-away-from-home in all the right ways.

about the process:

"It's so simple and natural. You touch a woodblock to wet clay and then to the fabric. After the clay dries, you dip the cloth into the indigo vat and the clay stays on. One dip gives the fabric a sky-blue color, two dips and it deepens to cobalt, three dips and its a saturated midnight blue. Then the fabric is laid out to dry in the sun and later the clay is washed off. The dyer says the indigo vats are like a mistress because they need constant attention. I was completely fascinated by the dyeing and printing processes, as well as how the finished product is used. Textiles become intimate companions in daily life, whether as a pillow, bedcover or sarong." - John Robshaw
