charles eames, co-designer of the original eames shell chairs, got his start in furniture after creating splints for the wounded during wartime. molding plywood, bending materials to fit the body: it's no wonder his designs are ergonomically spot on.

but we don't just love them for their practicality and comfort... eames' shell chairs expand on classic chair lines, with pyramidal legs and a bulbous seat that captured our inspiration at first glance. available with wooden dowel legs (shown above) or with a fully metal frame and legs named for Eiffel, of the Eiffel tower fame, due to their elegant bracing. the shell frame, originally made of fiberglass (now been deemed a menace), are all being newly made in eco-friendly, fully recyclable plastic whose clean-up and durability specs are spectacular.
